“The age of the open range is gone, and the era of large cattle drives is over,” said the photographer Ami Vitale, whose work from Montana is both a testament to a disappearing way of life and an ode to its endurance. For Vitale, who moved to Montana a couple of years ago after spending years covering conflicts in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East, and Asia, the area was “quiet, unpopulated, remote, a very different kind of life for me.” She told me, “I wanted to do a story about my home, about the deep connection people have to the land here, and the importance they place in stewardship, and the vanishing way of life in the American West.”
